DESCRIPTION :

A sequential sampling plan (SSP) monitor the cocoa pod borer’s eggs density to initiate insecticide control was studied. Insecticides application by the growers to control cocoa pod borer (CPB) are not warranted which lead to unnecessary increased in production cost due to the CPB exhibit spatial and temporal variation. Hence, the first objective of the study was to analyse the dispersion of the CPB eggs on the pods at different lengths using Taylor’s power law (TPL) and Iwao’s patchiness regression (IPR) while the second objective was to develop sequential sampling plans using Wald’s sequential probability ratio test (SPRT). The study was carried out in the Field 55 in the Cocoa Research and Development Center (CRDC) Madai, Sabah. In each plot, 30 trees were be randomly selected and within each selected tree, all cocoa pods susceptible to egg-laying (> 3 months old) were examined for CPB eggs besides the pod length and diameter also being recorded. The data were collected over six months from January 2011 till June 2011. Our results showed that TPL was a better fit for the data than the IPR. TPL’s b and IPR’s ß were both greater than 1 for pod length between 110mm and 170mm, indicating that CPB aggregated on pods. But, the values were less than 1 for pod length more than 170mm indicated the CPB uniformly distributed on pods. In order to develop the sequential sampling plan, the economic threshold (ET) values were calculated based on pod length 131mm till 150mm or pod at 1 month before ripen. Thus, Negative Binomial Distribution (NDB) model was appropriate for studying CPB eggs distribution and used in developing the sequential sampling plan. The validation of Wald’s SPRT using 6 independent samples from CRDC Madai showed better results compared to fixed sampling plan (n = 30) in reducing the sample number needed in making decision. The sequential sampling plan developed will be used in assisting the growers in pest management decisions of CPB on cocoa, especially using insecticide.
