DESCRIPTION The development of cocoa pods was monitored by measuring the length and equatorial width of the pod on a regular basis with objective to investigate the dynamics of growth of cocoa pods at the beginning of fruit set until ripening under field conditions. The information obtained should serve as a basis for enabling cocoa pods to be harvested at a known age for future study or for development of a better strategy in the management of cocoa pod borer. In this study, the dynamics of fruit growth was investigated by fitting logistic model functions to raw data. Because of the widespread distribution of CPB throughout cocoa growing areas, including at the experimental sites, the pods were protected from CPB infestation by sleeving them with transparent plastic bags. Results showed that the dynamics of growth of the cocoa pod varied between clones, and is followed by a simple sigmoid pattern with three distinct growing phases. The pods grew slowly during the initial phase, increased rapidly in the second phase and reached a maximum size in the beginning of the third phase. Cherelle wilt is the major causal agent for the mortality of cocoa pod and this could explain why pod sleeving and chemical spraying are not recommended to the pods that are less than 2 months old.

TITLE Alias, A. 2011. Resistance mechanisms in cocoa to cocoa pod borer. PhD Thesis. University of Reading. University of Reading
DESCRIPTION The underlying resistance mechanisms to cocoa pod borer ( CPB) in cocoa were investigated. Experiments performed under field conditions in Malaysia showed that female CPB preferred to lay eggs on pods of clones with a rough pod surface compared to clones with a smooth pod surface. This appeared to be related to a higher density of trichomes on rough pods. The production of volatile compounds by cocoa pod trichomes is thought to stimulate females CPB to lay more eggs. Cocoa pods develop a lignified sclerotic layer and the thickness of this sclerotic layer determines the hardness of the pod, but pod hardness also depends on the composition of sclereid cells in the sclerotic layer. The sclerotic layers are soft in young pods and gradually increase in thickness and hardness as the pod grows. The quality of the pod as a food source affected the life-history traits of the CPB. However, the concentration of nitrogen and polyphenols in the pod walls did not appear to be a factor limiting the growth and development of CPB larvae. Therefore, the importance of other food quality components such as lipids, proteins, amino acids and carbohydrates (including water) warrants further investigation. The variation in CPB attack between clones under natural field conditions appeared to be influenced by plant and insect variables, and modified by environmental conditions. A ny changes in the plant variables affect the spatial and temporal distribution of CPB and then, subsequently influence the expression of resistance. Clones with good resistant traits also face severe infestation in the absence of favourable pod size, particularly during low pod production or the presence of non-bearing cocoa trees within rows or blocks. The basis for characterising resistant clones was proposed. A resistance index based on eight variables, low number of CPB eggs recorded on the surface of the pod, low number of entry holes observed on the pod, harder sclerotic layer, smoother pod surface, high larval mortality in the pre-sclerotic layer, low larval penetration through the sclerotic layer, low number of exit holes, and low pod damage index was derived and is proposed as a basis for screening and selecting resistant clones to CPB. The lowest average rank for these variables reflects the highest overall resistance level to CPB. Among the eight variables, the percentage larval penetration appeared to be a prominent key to the damage severity of the cocoa pod

TITLE : Alias, A. 2007. Symbiotic improvement of Trichogrammatoidea cojuangcoi Nagaraja. The biocontrol agent of the cocoa pod borer, Conopomorpha cramerella (Snellen). Msc Thesis. Universiti Malaysia Sabah

DESCRIPTION : A study was conducted to improve the performance of Trichogrammatoidea cojuangcoi Nagaraja, the biocontrol agent of the cocoa pod borer (CPB), Conopomorpha cramerella (Snellen) through production of all female strains. It commenced with prospecting for egg parasitoids of CPB in cocoa smallholders’ fields in Sabah, which then lead to discovery of two egg parasitoids, Trichogramma chilonis Ishii and Trichogrammatoidea cojuangcoi Nagaraja. The former is a new record in Malaysia since yet reported parasitizing on CPB eggs, while the latter reconfirmed earlier findings although its was previously wrongly identified as Trichogrammatoidea bactrae fumata Nagaraja. PCR analysis indicates the presence of Wolbachia in local species, particularly for Td. cojuangcoi collected from Tenom although the impact on the female production is indistinguishable. Inter-specific horizontal transfer studies demonstrated that the bacteria could be spread horizontally when sharing the same host although the rate of transmission was regarded as inconsistent and low. Fitness studies of transfected Td. cojuangcoi suggest that the biological traits of the egg parasitoids are almost similar to wild parasitoids, although we expected some improvement in female production for the transfected lines or to those having a natural heritable Wolbachia. This could be due to Wolbachia losing its densities after rearing for several generations or the bacterium does not influence the female fitness at all. Our study also indicates that some of the virgin females collected from Tawau are capable to produce both sexes. This suggests that Td. cojuangcoi has a deuterotoky mode of reproduction, i.e. a mixture of parthenogenesis and sexual reproduction. A similar observation was made on transfected Td. cojuangcoi carrying ‘kaykai’ Wolbachia, collected from Tenom. The other parasitoids were observed to have a bisexual mode of reproduction. However, the successful parasitization on CPB eggs by Td. cojuangcoi was not influenced by the presence of Wolbachia or mode of reproduction. The study did indicate that Td. cojuangcoi collected from Tenom is the most promising biocontrol agent for controlling the CPB because of consistent success in field parasitism. Furthermore, this parasitoid is the second larger and produced higher percentages of female progeny, apart from inheriting a naturally present Wolbachia. In general, we were unsuccessful to produce an all-female strain but with the discovery of new parasitoids, this may help improving the efficacy if both of them are released simultaneously.
