Introduction

The rapid development of the cocoa industry in the late 1970s and early 1980s has sparked awareness to coordinate and integrate various industrial activities under an umbrella organization to ensure a healthy development. Therefore, the Malaysian Cocoa Board (LKM) was created. The LKM establishment act was approved by parliament in July 1988 and gazetted as Act 343 on 8 September 1988. LKM officially began operating on 18 July 1989.

The Malaysian Cocoa Board (MCB) is a federal statutory agency under the Ministry of Plantation Industries and Commodities (previously called Ministry of Primary Industries Malaysia until 2004). It was established under the Act of Parliament 343(incorporated) in 1988 and has been in operation since 1989. The main objective is to develop the cocoa industry in Malaysia to be well integrated and competitive in the global market. Emphasis is given to increasing productivity and efficiency in cocoa bean production and increasing downstream activities.

What we do?

Research And Development

Research and Development is the main activity of MFIs. Research programs and projects are conducted to address various problems and needs in cocoa growers and the cocoa downstream industry. The main purpose is to gain knowledge and develop technology and plant materials that can increase productivity, reduce production costs and labor requirements, improve the quality of cocoa beans and cocoa products, develop new products and new uses of cocoa and increase the competitive advantage of Malaysian cocoa beans and cocoa products. .

Market Development and Techno-Economy

The purpose of market development is to increase market share for Malaysian cocoa beans and cocoa products in international and domestic markets. Its activities include international and domestic promotions. International promotion is carried out through Trade and Technical Missions, as well as international expositions. Domestic promotion is done through cocoa parties, digital media (Television shows, websites) and exhibitions. The goodness of cocoa is the main theme of promotional activities. The economic program is to look at the economics of production from raw cocoa beans to finished products, through research and development, as well as census. Cocoa price information, market scenario and related statistics are also provided for industry reference.

Regulation and Quality Control

Licensing and grading are carried out to ensure that the quality of Malaysian cocoa beans meets the requirements of Malaysian standards. LKM licenses the activities of traders (plant material, wet cocoa beans, dry cocoa beans), the activities of traders of semi-processed cocoa products and the activities of cocoa grinders. It is the responsibility of LKM to create guidelines and standards for cocoa beans and cocoa products, as well as carry out regulation. Grading activities are quality certification and cocoa bean quality monitoring.

Target Group Development

The target group is small cocoa farmers, farmers and artisan chocolate entrepreneurs. The Target Group Development Program is included in the MFI expansion and development program. The main purpose of the Smallholder Development program is to increase smallholder cocoa productivity from less than 0.5 tons/ha/year to more than 1.5 tons/ha/year. Its activities include visits, meetings, the provision of planting materials and incentives, as well as training in cultivation technology and quality management. Agribusiness Development activities include advisory services and incentives for cocoa nurseries and wet cocoa bean processing. The purpose of the Handmade Chocolate Entrepreneur Development program is to create Malaysian entrepreneurs involved in the handmade chocolate industry and help entrepreneurs to produce competitive products. Its activities are handmade chocolate making courses, providing promotional opportunities and advisory services.

Technology Development and Transfer

Technology development and transfer activities include workshops, seminars, farm visits, demonstrations, as well as training courses in cocoa cultivation technology, chocolate manufacturing and product development.

Technical Services and Advice

LKM provides technical and advisory services to cocoa growers and downstream industries. Cocoa Innovation and Technology Center, Nilai has laboratory facilities for physical, chemical and microbiological analysis services for cocoa beans and cocoa products. The center is also equipped with a pilot laboratory for product development research services for industry.
